With the sinking supply of medical oxygen across the country, as COVID patients struggle for breath, to meet the oxygen demand and smooth transport across the country Indian Railways' recently launched its first ¡®Oxygen Express¡¯. Here's all you need to know:
The first 'Oxygen Express' departed from Central Railway's Kalamboli yard on Monday evening to ferry liquid oxygen for Maharashtra from Vishakhapatnam steel plant in Andhra Pradesh.
It is carrying 7 empty tankers and they will be loaded with Liquid Medical Oxygen once the train reaches the Vizag steel plant.
This train will move via Vasai Road, Jalgaon, Nagpur, Raipur Junction to Visakhapatnam steel plant siding in ECoR zone where it will be loaded with Liquid Medical Oxygen.
On Sunday, Railway Minister Piyush Goyal, in an interview to ANI, had informed that the central government was creating a green corridor for fast movement of 'Oxygen Express' trains to facilities for the smooth transport of oxygen to states.
The Railways is hence, expected to run the Oxygen Express over the next few days to transport liquid medical oxygen and oxygen cylinders across the country.
Many states have been reporting a shortage of medical supplies across India including beds and medical oxygen to treat COVID-19 patients.
The rolling stock for the same has been funded by the Indian Army and is maintained by the Railways.
"Due to restrictions of the height of Road Over Bridges and over-head equipment at certain locations, the model of road tanker T-1618 with a height of 3,320 mm was found feasible to be placed on flat wagons (DBKM) with a height of 1,290 mm," the railways said in a statement.
In order to ensure that parameters of transportation are tested, trials were conducted at various locations, it said.
On April 18 a trial was organised by the Western Railway at Boisar where a loaded tanker was placed on a flat DBKM wagon and all the required measurements were taken.
