No Strict Action Against Politicians Accused Of Hate Speech Shows Authorities Aren¡¯t Serious Enough

The protesters at Delhi¡¯s Shaheen Bagh have been painted as potential rapist and murderers. Women and children are allegedly used in Islamic State-like module. Over the last few days, many politicians have spewed targeted hatred against the protesters.

The leaders of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) have continued to attack the protests with straight up hate speech.

On Tuesday, BJP MP Parvesh Verma said that if Shaheen Bagh continued, it will become a Kashmir-like situation in Delhi and ¡°they¡¯ll¡± enter homes and rape sisters and daughters¡± unless BJP was voted to power.

He also made communal remarks saying all mosques on government land will be razed and Shaheen Bagh will be cleared within an hour if BJP was voted to power.

BJP IT media cell head Amit Malviya has been ardently attacking the women of Shaheen Bagh, who have been leading the protests for more than a month now.

On Monday, Minister of State for Finance Anurag Thakur had made an inflammatory speech during a public meeting at Rithala. Thakur made the public shout slogans of "Desh ke gaddaron ko¡±, followed by the crowd¡¯s response "goli maaro s****n ko". This loosely translates to ¡°Shoot down the traitors of India.¡± Later Thakur was joined by the Union Home Minister Amit Shah at the venue.

Even as politicians continue to make controversial statements, the Election Commission has ordered the BJP to remove them for its list of star campaigners for the 2020 Delhi assembly election.

In a press statement, the Election Commission said the BJP must remove the two from its star campaigner list with immediate effect.

"Election Commission has ordered the removal of Anurag Thakur and Parvesh Sahib Singh from the list of star campaigners of Bhartiya Janata Party for the general elections to the Legislative Assembly of the NCT of Delhi with immediate effect and until further orders," the Election Commission said in the statement.

The authorities have failed to take adequate action against those accused of hate speech. By no means, the action being taken by EC restraints the politicians from spewing hatred again. The BJP¡¯s campaign already looks lacklustre. The poll agenda is Shaheen Bagh and the contentious CAA. Their narrative has been Delhi (obviously, BJP supporters) vs those supporting Shaheen Bagh protest.
