The family of Anna Sebastian Perayil, a Chartered Accountant who worked with EY in Pune, has said they have no plans to take legal action against the company following their daughter's death due to work-related stress.
'Don't want this to happen again'
¡°My wife wrote the letter to the chairman to ensure that, even though our daughter is gone, such a thing should not happen to any other person. We are not going to take any legal steps against the company either,¡± Siby Joseph, Anna's father, said.
The 26-year-old, who joined EY's Audit team at S R Batliboi in Pune in March 2024, died on July 20 due to health complications caused by work-related stress and lack of rest.
How EY responded to Anna's death
EY India Chairman Rajiv Memani, who expressed his condolences for the family's irreparable loss, however, rejected the notion that Anan's death was related to work pressure. In an internal email, EY had also told its employees that Anna was already suffering from a health condition that worsened.
'Anna had no health issues'
However, Joseph said his daughter was very active and used to play badminton and jog with him when she was home.
¡°She was getting hardly any sleep and was unable to eat proper food due to her work schedule. She used to complain about this often, and it reached a point where we told her to quit the job. But she said she would continue to work as it was a reputed firm,¡± he said.
Government to probe Anna's death
While the family may not be pursuing any legal action, the government has already launched a probe into allegations of unsafe and exploitative work conditions at EY India.
"Whether it is a white-collar job or any other job, worker or employee at any level... if a country's citizen dies, then we obviously feel sad about it. An investigation is underway, and steps will be taken on the basis of the investigation," Union Labour and Employment Minister Mansukh Mandaviya said.
