RG Kar doc rape-murder: Women in Kolkata, suburbs to march at midnight in protest against brutality
On the eve of Independence Day, women across Kolkata and other parts of West Bengal are likely to hit the streets late night in protest against the rape and murder of a 31-yr-old resident doctor at the state-run RG Kar Medical College & Hospital.
Days after the brutal murder of a 31-year-old resident doctor in Kolkata's government-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, there is much grief and anger among the citizenry against the failure of the authorities to keep its women safe.
Women to protest on Kolkata streets
Come Wednesday, and women in the metropolis and other parts of West Bengal are likely to hit the streets late night in protest against the rape and murder of the resident doctor. The protest, which is slated to start at 11.55 pm on Wednesday night, has been described as, "For women's independence on the midnight of independence".

On Monday, social media was flooded with creative inserts that shared locations of the protest.
Popular actress Swastika Mukherjee shared a bunch of such posters on Instagram, urging women to own the streets on India's Independence Day eve, in order to make their voices heard. The first poster that the 'Qala' actress shared cited Jadavpur, Academy of Fine Arts and College Street as the locations from where the protest marches would begin. The poster also listed a few contact numbers for each location.
"Women, seize the night ... The night is ours ..." read the poster.
The 43-year-old actress then went on to share another poster which cited Calcutta University as another location.
Crime that shocked Kolkata
The state capital has seen massive protests and marches over the rape and murder of the doctor that has brought back the horrors of the Nirbhaya murder case of December 2012. The doctor was found dead on Friday morning in a seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in north Kolkata. The autopsy revealed injuries on her eyes, face, mouth, neck, limbs and private parts.

Doctors continue protest
The brutal murder sent shockwaves across the country and the medical fraternity has been demanding justice for her.
Junior doctors across West Bengal who have been pressing for magisterial probe into the killing of the woman doctor, on Tuesday set a deadline of August 14 for the Kolkata Police to complete their investigation.
They also continued their ceasework on Tuesday as a mark of protest, affecting healthcare services as long queues of patients were seen at out-patient departments (OPDs) of all government hospitals.

Earlier this year,
Till Sunday, junior doctors had attended to emergency duties, but from Monday morning, they ceased all work.
The state government has cancelled the leaves of all senior doctors to handle the influx of patients, mostly in the OPDs.
