Tamil Nadu CM Urges PM To Honour Wing Commander Abhinandan With Param Vir Chakra
In a letter to Modi, Palaniswami said the IAF pilot, a native of Tamil Nadu, displayed amazing poise and confidence in the face of adverse condition and it would be appropriate he be awarded the highest military honour.
Ever since Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman attacked the Pakistani Air Force planes, the Indian pilot was appreciated for his valour. In the video that was released by the Pakistan army spokesperson on his official Twitter handle, Varthaman can be seen at his best behaviour as he refuses to reveal any sensitive information about his mother country.
The Indian government conducted backdoor talks to put pressure on Pakistan, warning that as per Geneva convention, any Prisoner of War should not be subjected to any insults, public curiosity or physical abuse. Moreover, given Pakistan¡¯s history of inhuman exploitation and torture of Indian army soldiers during past wars, it was imperative to ensure that Wing Commander Abhinandan was treated properly.

Finally, Abhinandan returned to India last Friday via the Attari-Wagah border and was taken to the Army hospital. Now, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister K Palaniswami has urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to confer Param Vir Chakra, the country's highest military honour, on Wing Commander Varthaman.
In a letter to PM Modi, Palaniswami said the IAF pilot, a native of Tamil Nadu, displayed amazing poise and confidence in the face of adverse condition and it would be appropriate he be awarded the highest military honour.
He noted that Varthaman was released by Pakistan "due to the diplomatic initiatives" of the Prime Minister and "intense international pressure", PTI reported.
Palaniswami recalled that the MiG-21 Bison aircraft piloted by Varthaman had shot down a Pakistan Air Force fighter (F-16) when it tried to violate India's air space and that he was later taken into custody by Pakistani armed forces.
According to the central government, Param Vir Chakra, "Is awarded for most conspicuous bravery or some daring or pre-eminent act of valour or self-sacrifice, in the presence of the enemy, whether on land, at sea, or in the air."
