Deepfakes and their detrimental effects have gained widespread attention on social media.
The latest addition to the deepfake trend features Virat Kohli, joining the ranks of numerous celebrities like Rashmika Mandanna, Katrina Kaif, Kajol, and Alia Bhatt who have previously been targeted.
Deepfake is a video or photo of a person in which their face or body has been digitally altered so that they appear to be someone else, typically used maliciously or to spread false information.

According to reports, scammers utilised a deepfake featuring Kohli to endorse the fraudulent advertisement.
To enhance the credibility of the deceptive promo, the fraudster took an additional step by incorporating a renowned Indian journalist, along with broadcast-quality graphics, giving the illusion that the ad was aired live on television.
The video appears freakish, with Virat Kohli seen lip-syncing. However, upon closer scrutiny, one can discern that the voice is mechanical, revealing that it isn't actually Kohli.
Not the first instance
The first deepfake video that went viral is that of actress Rashmika Mandanna.
The video displayed an individual identified as Zara Patel, clad in a black workout onesie within an elevator. Her facial features were altered using Artificial Intelligence (AI) to resemble Mandanna.
The next hit was actress Kajol. In the fake video, she was shown changing her clothes on camera.
Other than her, Katrina Kaif, Alia Bhatt, Sachin Tendulkar and a plethora of other personalities have fallen victim to the deepfake trend.
And, with continuous advancements in AI, there seems to be no end to the deepfake fiasco.
According to Divyendra Singh Jadoun, the founder of The Indian Deepfaker, a website specializing in providing "hyper-realistic content" for nearly three years through deepfake-as-a-service, you can now obtain a deepfake video for as little as Rs 8.
Other than making fraud videos, deepfake technology is also used by scammers to get around biometric authentication, produce fake documents, and get past fraud detection systems.
