The man, the myth, the legend: Mohammed Shami stands out as one of India's top fast bowlers at the moment. Known for his consistent speed of 140 km/h as a right-arm pacer, he is the star of the lot in 2023. Well, if you step foot onto the desi internet scene even for a split second, you will swiftly realise the sheer power Shami holds over cricket fanatics after his magnificent spell in the 2023 ICC World Cup.
His Beginning
Shami spent his childhood in Sahaspur village, Amroha, Uttar Pradesh, among four siblings. His father, Tauseef Ali, once a swift bowler in his younger days and a farmer by profession, introduced Shami to cricket. At the age of 15, Shami began his cricket journey when he was brought to Badruddin Siddique, a cricket coach in Moradabad.
His Debut In International Matches
Shami made his Test debut against the West Indies in November 2013, playing in front of his home crowd at Eden Gardens in Kolkata. He had an impressive start, taking his first Test wicket (Kieran Powell) and ending the first innings with figures of 4/71. In the second inning, he claimed 5/47.
His total of nine wickets for 118 runs in the match set a record for the most wickets taken by an Indian pacer on debut, surpassing Munaf Patel's previous record of seven wickets for 97 runs in Mohali in 2006.
Shami entered the ODI arena in early 2013, swiftly rising as a standout player in limited-overs cricket. Yet, his biggest challenge has been dealing with injuries and inconsistency, which remain his primary setbacks to this day.
His Bout In 2015's ICC World Cup Race
Shami was part of the 15-player squad selected for the 2015 Cricket World Cup and secured his spot in the playing XI. In India's opening match against Pakistan, he made a significant impact by claiming 4 wickets for 35 runs from his 9 overs, playing a pivotal role in India's victory.
Shami ended the tournament with 17 wickets (a personal record he has since beaten during the 2023 World Cup), maintaining an impressive average of 17.29 and an economy rate of 4.81. His performance placed him as the fourth-highest wicket-taker overall.
His Battles With Injuries
After the 2015 World Cup ended in June, Shami disclosed that he had been bowling despite recurring pain in his left knee. Subsequently, he underwent surgery to address the issue.
Shami made a comeback to the squad for the 2017 ICC Champions Trophy after being sidelined for two years due to a shoulder injury. However, due to insufficient playing time and preparation, he didn't participate in any matches during the tournament.
His Memorable 2019 World Cup Hat Trick
In April 2019, Shami was selected for India's 2019 Cricket World Cup squad, recognised for his strong performances in white-ball cricket. Among the squad members, he was one of only three fast bowlers chosen. During the match against Afghanistan on June 22, 2019, Shami achieved a remarkable feat by taking a hat-trick, becoming the ninth cricketer and the second Indian bowler after Chetan Sharma to accomplish this in a World Cup match.
His Tangled Personal Life
Shami tied the knot with Hasin Jahan in 2014, and they have one child together. In 2020, Shami opened up about the toll that injuries and various allegations from his wife had on his mental well-being. He revealed contemplating drastic actions on three occasions during that period and credited his family for providing crucial support through those tough times.
His Triumph
The journey was long and hard, but not without its share of glory. During the ongoing 2023 ICC World Cup matches, Mohammed Shami, who was initially left out of the final 11, made his way into the tournament after Hardik Pandya suffered an injury. And the rest was history.
Shami crushed all standing wicket-taking records in the 2023 tournament and has landed the first position with 23 wickets. Fans have a hard time not praising the ¡°GOAT¡± and his exceptional performance in the tournament. However, looking at his long journey of cricket, it is clear that Shami is a diamond that came out triumphant through magnitudes of surmounting trials and tribulations.
