Apple May Be Ditching The Under-Display TouchID In The iPhone 8 For Face Recognition
If the prediction holds true, the iPhone Edition will no longer be delayed to market.
After months of rumours saying Apple was attempting to embed a fingerprint scanner into the iPhone 8¡¯s display, followed by more news that it was the reason for the device¡¯s delay, the agenda may have changed once more.

KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo today made a few predictions for the upcoming iPhone Edition, one of which stating that Apple would be forgoing the TouchID entirely.
The company has reportedly been having technical difficulties installing the new Touch ID. According to Kuo, Apple has now decided to just skip the feature this time, instead going for ¡°3D sensing for facial recognition.¡±
Kuo also says the iPhone 8, expected to be announced in September, will have ¡°the highest screen-to-body ratio of any smartphone currently available worldwide.¡± It¡¯s expected to have significantly smaller bezels and an edge-to-edge display, with only a ¡°notch¡± for the front camera and sensors.
¡°We predict the OLED model won¡¯t support fingerprint recognition,¡± Kuo¡¯s firm said in its report, ¡°reasons being the full-screen design doesn¡¯t work with existing capacitive fingerprint recognition, and the scan-through ability of the under-display fingerprint solution still has technical challenges. As the new OLED iPhone won¡¯t support under-display fingerprint recognition, we now do not expect production ramp-up will be delayed again.¡±
Aside from that, Kuo also believe the iPhone 8 will be available in fewer colours than the iPhone 7s and 7s Plus, supposedly to help Apple¡¯s new OLED device maintain a premium feel.
