Facebook, WhatsApp, Instagram Suffer Second Outage This Week: Twitter Reacts
Facebook and its sister companies WhatsApp, Instagram and Messenger suffered a second outage this week on Saturday, forcing Facebook companies offline
Facebook and its sister companies WhatsApp, Instagram and Messenger suffered a second outage this week on Saturday after experiencing a six-hour-long lapse in services earlier on Monday.
The outage on Monday marked a historic service blackout for the company. The last time the company went completely offline was in 2008, when Facebook was starting to gain popularity.
What caused the new Facebook outage?
Saturday's outage lasted for roughly two hours and affected all Facebook services including WhatsApp, Instagram, Messenger and even Workplace around the globe. ¡°We¡¯re so sorry if you weren¡¯t able to access our products during the last couple of hours", Facebook announced on Twitter after the second outage.
It's still unclear what caused the new Facebook shutdown. Even then, Facebook claims that the new outage has nothing to do with happened on Monday.
We¡¯re so sorry if you weren¡¯t able to access our products during the last couple of hours. We know how much you depend on us to communicate with one another. We fixed the issue ¡ª thanks again for your patience this week.

On Monday, Facebook's data centres that connect the company globally suffered shutdowns, forcing all its platforms offline. Not even Facebook employee internal systems were working at that point, making the outage historic.
The centralised model of Facebook caused not just one, but all services to shut down at the same time. This incident highlights the perils of having a single central authority running some of the world's favourite social media platforms.

Facebook's big week
The world heavily relies on Facebook-owned applications for communication, with 3.5 billion regular users. Its sister company WhatSapp has one billion regular users.
This unprecedented series of outages comes amid a whistleblower revelation about Facebook's inner working whereby a former employee accused Facebook of prioritising profit over the well-being of its users.

Frances Haugen also alleged that the company's current trajectory would have far-reaching effects on democracy and free speech in a testimony to US lawmakers, while urging them to help Facebook.
