However, it looks like while fixing the system, they¡¯ve managed to make it slightly worse instead as reportedly the facial recognition system can be fooled pretty easily using dolls.
This was discovered by one Alexander Chalkidis, who shared this via a YouTube video on his channel how easy was it to fool Instagram¡¯s system with a Barbie doll.

In the video, you can see Chalkdis moving the doll¡¯s head according to the directions the app is showing on the screen. Moments later you see the algorithm verify the doll as a user, with a pop-up, ¡°video selfie complete¡± upon completion.
Another video by Chalkdis shows the system being fooled even by a male ¡®Ken¡¯ doll.
The new verification only happens for new users signing up on the platform. Existing users haven¡¯t really been greeted with this prompt yet.

Instagram has highlighted that the video selfie captured by the new user would not be visible to anyone else on the platform and will be deleted within 30 days. It also reveals that it isn¡¯t collecting biometric or facial recognition data.
In case you thought Instagram is the only company to implement such a facial-recognition verification system, you¡¯d be surprised to know that a similar system is also used by online dating platforms, Tinder and Bumble -- users are asked to share their selfies from a specific angle to verify their identity.
