Mark Zuckerberg Teases Facebook's Wristband That Lets You Control Other Devices

Facebook's first neural interface device is coming! On Wednesday, Meta's CEO Mark Zuckerberg teased new smart glasses project in collaboration with eyewear company EssilorLuxottica.

In a Facebook post, Zuckerberg shared a photo of the eyewear company's chairman wearing a prototype of a neural interface wristband. This wristband has been designed to direct other devices.

"Here Leonardo is using a prototype of our neural interface EMG [electromyography] wristband that will eventually let you control your glasses and other devices," Zuckerberg said in a post on Facebook.

Facebook's metaverse ambitions

Last year, Facebook's parent company Meta in a blog post announced that it planned to create a wristband that would allow users to control augmented reality glasses - in turn, allowing users to interact with a virtual world simply using finger movements.

Meta and EssilorLuxottica have made glasses before. For instance, the companies sell a classic Ray-Ban Wayfarer that allows the user to capture photos and listen to music and calls that came out in 2020.

A lot of tech companies are now cashing in on the wearable tech business. These are the same companies pitching various metaverses as the future of internet. Both Google and Amazon are also betting on smart glasses to replace phones eventually altogether. And so is Apple!

Metaverses are developing at a very fast pace. From ones that allow you to kiss to others that are simply intended for leisure, Facebook's vision for the future of the internet may not be so far off from what is actually happening. The only impediment is, of course, adaptability and cost. To mainstream wearable metaverse-enabling tech, moguls like Zuckerberg need to also work on improving how users respond to such new tech and whether its exorbitant pricing will create more divides in the digital world of haves and have-nots.
