Despite Global GPU Shortage, Nvidia Made $5 Billion In Revenue Last Quarter

The pandemic has had a rather positive and negative impact on the lives of gamers. On one had the lockdown and gave them time to play more. However, when the time came to upgrade their hardware, it also caused an immense shortage in PC hardware space, particularly with CPUs and GPUs.

When Nvidia launched its RTX 30 series GPUs the limited stocks disappeared in an instant and many even re-sold the GPUs at a considerably higher price. But it looks like limited sales caused by limited stocks hasn¡¯t hit Nvidia as hard, according to its Q4 2021 earnings report.

Nvidia reported that it made a record-breaking $5 billion in revenue -- 61 percent year over year. Nvidia has predicted to make another $5 billion in revenue during Q1 of 2022.

It is surprising to see such a prediction for Q1 that is often known to be a bit underperforming compared to other quarters. Nvidia has also mentioned spare supply of its components will continue throughout the next quarter.

Analysts on average were expecting $4.82 billion, according to IBES data from Refinitiv. Revenue in Nvidia¡¯s gaming segment was $2.5 billion, more than what analysts estimated -- $2.36 billion, based on data from FactSet. This also revealed that data centre revenue for Nvidia was $1.9 billion above estimates of $1.84 billion.

Nvidia also revealed that it is trying its best to get GPUs in the hands of the gamers and not at the hands of cryptocurrency miners. To force cryptocurrency miners to not hoard all the GPUs, it has announced that it will introduce a novel GPU driver that will weaken its ability to farm Ethereum by half.

Along with this it also announced that it plans on releasing crypto mining-specific GPUs that won¡¯t have a display output, just the hardware that will be optimised for the purpose of cryptocurrency mining. The card is expected to be showcased sometime in March this year.
