Asus ROG Zephyrus G15 Is A Powerful Gaming Machine That¡¯s Very Light To Carry Around

Today, gaming laptops come in numerous shapes and sizes, but all of them have one thing in common -- they're heavy to carry around every day. And finding a light, sleek model without compromising on thermals and performance is a challenging battle.

Asus with its ROG Zephyrus G15 aims to solve this, with powerful hardware and RTX 3070 Ti GPU, in a form factor that¡¯s just 2 centimetres thick and weighs just 1.9 kilograms. But does it do it without compromising on thermals and overall performance? Let¡¯s find out.

Design

Aesthetically, the G15 has retained a lot of elements from its predecessor while also bringing in some fresh elements of its own. The white colourway pops out but isn¡¯t a mess to clean and maintain, thanks to a good choice in materials.

The entire machine is built of polycarbonate, and has some flex in the keyboard area as well as the panel, but nothing that makes its quality feel flimsy.

Opening the lid props the keyboard at an angle, allowing better ventilation as well as a good angle to type or game on, which feels so good.

You still get an RGB keyboard (which didn¡¯t look as good on white keycaps), however, overall the G15 has subtle low-key aesthetics which in my opinion is perfect for those who don¡¯t want to show off that they're a gamer.

Display

The Zephyrus G15 sports a 15.6-inch WQHD panel, sporting a resolution of 2560x1440 pixels. This panel is an IPS panel and it also sports a 240Hz refresh rate, which is perfect, if you¡¯re practising for esports tournaments.

Gaming on this felt butter smooth, thanks to the panel.

It was also surprisingly bright while playing against sunlight from my window. The anti-glare coating definitely helped a ton here.

For people who love doing creative tasks, this panel is also Pantone-validated and supports Dolby Vision HDR and that was evident in the near-accurate colour reproduction the panel was capable of.

I/O and ports

The Zephyrus G15 has left no stone unturned in terms of I/O, at least as per 2022 standards -- we¡¯ve got a 3.5mm Combo Audio Jack, one HDMI 2.0b port, two USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-A, one RJ45 LAN port, two USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C with support for DisplayPort and power delivery and lastly, one microSD (UHS-II).

Overall, this machine has enough ports to be a perfect desktop replacement laptop, especially with the large 15.6-inch display.

Performance

In terms of hardware, The G15 is packing quite a punch -- AMD¡¯s Ryzen 9 6900HS Mobile Processor (8-core/16-thread, 16MB cache, up to 4.9 GHz max boost) paired with 16GB of DDR5-4800 MHz RAM. In the graphics department you get Nvidia¡¯s RTX 3070 Ti with 8GB of GDDR6 memory.

It scored well in synthetic benchmarks, but definitely not the best across. Playing Cyberpunk 2077 with DX12 and all settings maxed out (without ray tracing), the G15 was able to touch around 60fps with ease on full-HD resolutions and around 42fps on average when playing on QHD resolution.

Playing Control with maxed-out settings on full-HD resolution (without ray tracing) the G15 delivered an impressive 79fps on average. This dropped to around 50fps when playing natively on QHD. COD Warzone with 100-percent render resolution, natively on QHD was able to run at around 140fps.

Even demanding titles like Flight Simulator 2020 was able to run at 45fps on QHD resolution on ultra settings, which is extremely commendable.

While playing too, it managed to keep things pretty cool and quiet. This was partially thanks to the use of Thermal Grizzly¡¯s liquid metal for heat conduction, instead of a conventional thermal paste, alongside a cleverly engineered cooling solution that offers the hardware some wiggle room under immense pressure.

Should you buy the Asus Zephyrus G15?

Asus¡¯s Zephyrus G15 manages to offer a pretty solid package in terms of portability, performance and features that any power user or gamer on the go desires.

Sure, its performance isn¡¯t the best, but it¡¯s impressive for the specs that are on the table and at a premium price point of Rs 2,01,990, it doesn't get better than this.
