OPENAI ROADMAP UPDATE FOR GPT-4.5 and GPT-5:
¡ª Sam Altman (@sama) February 12, 2025
We want to do a better job of sharing our intended roadmap, and a much better job simplifying our product offerings.
We want AI to ¡°just work¡± for you; we realize how complicated our model and product offerings have gotten.
We hate¡
Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, has revealed the company's roadmap for its next AI models, GPT-4.5 and GPT-5. The aim is to simplify the product offering while improving user experience and providing users with even more under the ChatGPT free tier.
Altman acknowledged the complexity of existing model selections and wished to revert to a more seamless, unified intelligence system in his lengthy announcement on X, emphasizing the need for AI to "just work" for consumers.
For example, the business intends to remove the model selector option, significantly simplifying the user interface and interaction with AI models. This change seeks to improve user experience by eliminating the manual model selection requirement.
A non-chain-of-thought model has been introduced in GPT-4.5
Internally code-named "Orion," GPT-4.5 is expected to be the final model from OpenAI to lack chain-of-thought capabilities. This next and last version shows a deliberate move towards models that can execute more complex reasoning by processing and assessing numerous steps before concluding.
Adding chain-of-thought processing is anticipated to improve the models' capacity to manage complex tasks involving more complex cognitive processes.

OpenAI intends to integrate its o-series and GPT-series models into a unified system that uses all available tools after GPT-4.5. By developing AI to calculate the right amount of thinking time for different tasks, this integrated strategy aims to improve efficiency and effectiveness across various applications.
GPT-5 recommends integrating technology from the o3 model, which will no longer be a stand-alone offering, to represent a cohesive system.
GPT 5 will be offered for free by OpenAI
Altman mentioned in the post that all users will receive the future GPT 5 at no cost. It has been announced that the new OpenAI flagship model would provide free users with limitless access.
Of course, paying users have access to a lot more. "Unlimited chat access to GPT-5 at the standard intelligence setting (!!) will be granted to the free tier of ChatGPT, subject to abuse thresholds," he said.
According to him, GPT 5 will be able to be run at a greater degree of intelligence by Plus members and at an even higher level by Pro subscribers. These models will include deep research, speech, canvas, and search, among other things.

Last week, OpenAI unveiled Deep Research, an AI agent built to perform in-depth user research. It is the company's second AI agent, driven by the o3 model, and it seeks to reduce user workload by conducting extensive research in minutes.
CEO Sam Altman recently revealed that the business intends to make the model available to both Plus and free customers after launching it for ChatGPT Pro members. But there's a limit to it.
The free tier of OpenAI will allow two users per month, while the Plus tier will allow ten. In the tweet, he also stated, "With the intent to scale these up over time."
