The incident was captured by a photographer named Deon Kelbrick, who was on safari with a group of tourists.

Sharing the clip on Instagram, Kelbrick wrote: "Dark Mane Avoca male lion gets caught in between a herd of buffalo and fights for his life."
"The pride attempted a hunt on a herd of buffalo and things went south quickly when the whole herd retaliated with a huge stampede towards the lions and, unfortunately, the older male lion could not get out of the way quick enough because of his injury," the caption added.
In the video, the old lion can be seen getting thrown around and trampled before the rest of the pride came to his aid.
However, the photographer revealed in the comment section that the lion passed away three days after the attack.
Viral video shocked people
The clip has amassed more than 4.5 million views on Instagram. People were shocked to see the lion getting trampled mercilessly.

It's not often you see a lion getting attacked like that. Lions are the only big cats that live in groups called prides. The lionesses and their young ones form the core of the pride, while male lions live separately from them.
The social structure of a pride is complex, with each lion having its own role to play. The dominant male and female are usually the only ones to mate, although other males may also mate with females if they have the chance.
The males defend their territory against other prides and hunt for food for themselves and their family group. They are also responsible for protecting cubs from rival males, hyenas, and other predators.
