Five people including two Indian Army soldiers got a new lease of life thanks to the organs that were donated by the family of a brain-dead woman.
Brain-dead woman saves five lives
The organs were procured at the Command Hospital Southern Command (CHSC) in Pune, Maharashtra, as per ANI. The transplants were the result of surgical procedures that spanned the night of July 14 and the wee hours of July 15. Two kidneys were given to the two Army jawans, the eyes were sent to the eye bank at CH(SC)-Armed forces medical college complex, while a patient at Ruby Hall clinic in Pune received the liver, the report adds.
The family wanted to donate the organs and help patients in need
"A young lady was brought to Command Hospital (Southern Command), (CHSC) in her last stages of her life after an unfortunate event. On admission, the vital brain signs of life were not present in her. The family was aware of the concept of organ donation after death. After discussion with the transplant coordinator of the hospital, the family desired that the organs of the lady should be donated to patients who are in dire need of them," the defence PRO said.
According to ANI, the transplant team at Command Hospital (Southern Command) was informed after clearances were issued. The zonal transplant coordination centre (ZTCC) and Army Organ Retrieval and Transplant Authority (AORTA) were also alerted.
"A benevolent gesture of organ donation after death and a well-coordinated effort at CH(SC), gave life and eyesight to five severely ill patients. It bolsters the belief that "don't take your organs to heaven, God knows we need them here!"
