Rajasthan: This Bride Wore A Sherwani & Rode A Horse To Promote Gender Equality

We all know contemporary Indian weddings work. The groom arrives at the bride's residence riding a horse in a dapper sherwani. But looks like this bride completely changed that narrative by wearing a sherwani, pagdi and riding a horse at her wedding.

This very unique instance occurred in Ranoli village in Rajasthan¡¯s Sikar district as people of the village witnessed a bride riding a horse to mark the pre-wedding ritual of ¡®Bandori¡¯.

This bride is named Kritika Saini and ahead of the wedding, her family made her do the Bandori ritual like a groom, to convey the message of equality between the genders. The family wanted to convey that one should never differentiate between daughters and sons and should provide them with equal opportunities.

According to a report by Bhaskar.com, Kritika¡¯s Bandori was taken out in Sikar on Monday night. Breaking stereotypes, Kritika mounted a horse wearing a sherwani and a pagdi, just like a groom.

The best part about this entire instance is that the bride made the sherwani with her own hands.

The bride¡¯s father Mahavir Saini talked about the unusual and empowering act and said that he has raised his daughters like sons. He had always desired to take out his daughter¡¯s wedding procession, just like a son. He also said that the groom refused to accept Rs 1 lakh ¡®sagun¡¯ amount during their engagement ceremony. After the pre-wedding ritual, Kritika tied the knot with Manish Saini on December 1.

Both the bride and the groom are well-educated and qualified. While Kritika has done a course in fashion designing from Jaipur, the groom is an accountant by profession. Kritika has also served in Scout for about 7 years for which she received many awards at the state and district level. Kritika, who is the youngest in the family, has three sisters and two brothers.

This isn't the first time a bride has pushed away all gender stereotypes. About two years ago, a bride also from Rajasthan named Neha Khichar dressed up in a sherwani and rode a horse in a pre-wedding ritual called 'Bandori'. She was an IIT graduate and worked as an official with Indian Oil at Mathura refinery.

It is always lovely to see how such progressive acts - especially in our own country.
