The one-minute video, shared by X user @SpriterTeam, showed the massive iceberg approaching the Canadian continent. The video has received over 10.5 million views and over 124.2K likes since it was shared on Tuesday. Other users flocked to the social media platform, posting videos of the gigantic ice block floating perilously close to the coast.
According to media sources, Newfoundland has a reputation for iceberg chasing, which is when people try to see enormous chunks of ice coming along the area known as 'Iceberg Alley,' which is located in a stream in the eastern province of Newfoundland and Labrador.
About 90% of global icebergs every year come from Greenland's glaciers, with the remainder coming from Canada's Arctic. They separate when temperatures rise and last for a few months.
The largest iceberg, believed to be 135 kilometres long and 25 kilometres wide, was sighted travelling towards South Georgia Island in 2021. Climate warming has hastened the melting of the Earth's ice caps, making these icebergs more common.
According to a 2019 study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, Greenland's deglaciation is occurring four times quicker than projected due to oceanic and atmospheric forcings, projecting it to be a major contributor to sea level rise.
As per the US Coast Guard and the International Ice Patrol, there might be as many as 2,265 icebergs near the Labrador region, and 2023 will be the first year since 2019 with more than a 'light' iceberg extent.
'This Is Fascinating': The Internet Is In Love With The View
While the iceberg's magnificence is breathtaking, it also reminds us of climate change's continued impact. Icebergs of this size have become more common as global temperatures rise, posing possible dangers to maritime navigation and coastal communities.
The massive iceberg's approach to Newfoundland has become a shared experience in this age of immediate internet communication, uniting people from all origins in their respect for the grandeur of our planet. It emphasises the necessity of environmental protection and instills a sense of responsibility for the Earth's delicate ecosystems.
Fascinating, can these things produce mini tsunamis as they melt and parts break off? Time to be careful.
