Is virtual autism real?
Various studies establish that too much screen time may impact brain development, leading to challenges with communication and emotional regulation in some teens. ¡°Virtual autism is when young children below 10 are exposed to screens, which leads to ASD-like symptoms. Currently, there are a large number of children who have developmental delays, speech issues, and social withdrawal that are similar to the symptoms of autism spectrum disorder (ASD),¡± explains Dr. Amit Gupta, Senior Neonatologist & Pediatrician, Motherhood Hospitals, Noida.
It is a known fact that children need real-world interactions, physical play, and social engagement for growth and development.
According to various studies, too much screen time can impact every aspect of a child¡¯s life, affecting language skills, emotional regulation, and attention span. Research also suggests that reducing screen exposure and increasing interactive activities can reverse these symptoms in children and improve their quality of life. Dr. Gupta adds, ¡°It is the need of the hour for parents to encourage their children to play outdoors, read, or opt for indoor games instead of spending time glued to their smartphones.¡±
Social media and autism: A trend to worry about
According to Dr. Kathwate, ¡°Currently, a lot is discussed about social media and autism. No evidence proves the connection between social media and autism in teens. A look at some preventive tips
Opt for gardening, dancing, or painting, which will boost creativity instead of just scrolling or watching movies. Parents should ensure that children spend valuable time learning new skills rather than on social media.
Doing so can help with cognitive and emotional well-being. Dr. Gupta, ¡°Setting screen time limits and engaging in interactive learning can help prevent virtual autism-like behaviors in children.¡± It is also imperative to consult a pediatrician or specialist if the parents wish to seek guidance and support.
