Bank Holidays December 2022: There Are 13 Bank Holidays This Month

The months of October 2022 and November 2022 were full of festivals and celebrations across the country. But in December there are only 13 days when many private and public sector banks will remain closed due to additional bank holidays including weekends. Banks will be shut for 13 days in December 2022 including the second and fourth Saturdays and Sundays as per the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) guidelines, banks will be closed on all public holidays with some regional holidays, depending on the particular state. Regional holidays are decided by the respective state governments.

The month of December 2022 has 13 bank holidays, beginning with the Feast of St. Francis Xavier on the 3rd of December (Saturday), and other holidays, such as the Christmas Festival on the 24th of December, which is also the fourth Saturday of the month, will be observed as bank holidays that are applicable to all banks in India except some states.

People will not face any problems in bank-related work as holidays are not frequent or at short intervals, and ATMs, cash deposits, online banking, and mobile banking will continue to function.These holidays may vary from state to state as holidays are determined keeping in mind the local festivals.

According to RBI guidelines, banks are closed on Sundays as well as on the second and fourth Saturdays of the month. Under the Negotiable Instruments Act, the RBI has declared holidays on December 3, 12, 19, 24, 26, 29, 30, and 31. Apart from this, there are four Sundays in the month and also the second and fourth Saturdays.

According to the Reserve Bank's calendar, apart from the weekend, there are 8 bank holidays in December. Under the Negotiable Instruments Act, 1881, the central government divided the holidays into three categories: those under the Negotiable Instruments Act, real-time gross settlement holidays, and banks¡¯ closing of accounts.

1. December 3 (Saturday): Feast of St. Francis Xavier

Banks remain closed in Goa on Friday, December 3, 2022, on the occasion of the Feast of St. Francis Xavier, which is celebrated by Goans all throughout the state. The feast commemorates the date the saint died and was buried. Thousands of people come together to pay their respects to the saint and enjoy the festivities.

2. December 4 (Sunday) - Weekend Bank Holiday

Banks across the country remain closed on their weekly holidays on Sunday, December 5, 2022.

3. December 10 (Second Saturday of the month) - Weekend Bank Holiday

All the banks in the country remain closed on the second Saturday of the month on 10 December 2022.

4. December 11 (Sunday) - Weekend Bank Holiday

Banks across the country will be closed on their weekly off on Sunday, 11 December 2022.

5. December 12 (Monday) - Pa-Togan Nengminja Sangma

Banks will be closed in Meghalaya on Monday, December 12, 2022, on the occasion of Pa-Togan Nengminja Sangma.

6. December 18 (Sunday) - Weekend Bank Holiday

Banks across the country will be closed on their weekly off on Sunday, 18 December 2022.

7. December 19 (Monday) - Goa Liberation Day

Banks will be closed in Goa on Monday, December 19, 2022, on the occasion of Goa Liberation Day.

8. December 24 (Saturday) - Christmas Festival (Christmas Eve) & Fourth Saturday of The Month

All the banks in the country remain closed on the fourth Saturday of the month on 24 December 2022, especially in Meghalaya on the occasion of Christmas Festival.

9. December 25 (Sunday) - Weekend Bank Holiday

Banks across the country will be closed on their weekly off on Sunday, 25 December 2022.

10. December 26 (Monday) - Christmas Celebration/Losoong/Namsoong

In Mizoram, Sikkim, and Meghalaya banks will be closed on Monday, 26 December 2022 on the occasion of the Christman celebration. The Christmas celebration runs for 4 days; December 23(Christmas Preparatory Day), December 24 (Christmas Eve), December 25 (Christmas Day), and December 26 (Christmas Festival) and the state government of Mizoram has announced that December 27 would be an additional public holiday in government offices, banks, and educational institutions in Mizoram, Source.

11. December 29 (Thursday) - Guru Gobind Singh Ji Birthday

Banks will be closed in Chandigarh on Thursday, December 29 to celebrate the birthday anniversary of Shri Guru Gobind Singh Ji.

12. December 30 (Friday) - U Kiang Nangbah

Banks will be closed in Meghalaya on Friday, December 30 every year to commemorate the much-respected freedom fighter, U Kiang Nangbah who was belonged to the Jaintia tribal ethnic community of the state of Meghalaya and martyr in the Indian freedom struggle against the British. He was hanged to death by the British on 30 December 1862 in Jowai Town.

13. December 31 (Saturday) - New Year¡¯s Eve

Banks will be closed on Saturday, December 31, 2022, on New Year's Eve in Mizoram.

As per the RBI rules, there are three categorised holidays and they are as follows:

1. Holiday under Negotiable Instruments Act

2. Holiday under the Negotiable Instruments Act and Real-Time Gross Settlement Holiday

3. Banks' Closing of Accounts
