Diwali 2024: Woman shocked to find hidden bundles of old Rs 500 and Rs 1000 notes during Diwali cleaning-'Ye kya hogaya?'
As families prepare for Diwali, one woman's cleaning adventure took a surprising turn when she found a hidden stash of cash, only to discover it was from before India's demonetisation in 2016. Her shocked reaction in the video sparked humorous comments about the perils of hidden money and the curiosity of what others might uncover while tidying up for the festival.
Diwali has arrived, and families have wrapped up the annual ¡°Diwali ki safai¡± amid the usual chaos and arguments. But for one family, this year's cleaning turned sour when they discovered they had lost a huge amount of money.
User Deepti Gaba recently shared a captivating video on Instagram with the caption, ¡°Ye kya hogaya?¡± (What just happened?).
In the video, she¡¯s shocked as she uncovers a stash of money she had hidden away years ago, with her husband having no idea about it.
Finding forgotten cash should be exciting, right? Well, not quite!
The money she found was from before India¡¯s demonetisation in 2016, when the government invalidated Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes.
In the video, the caption states, "What should I do now?"
On November 8, 2016, the Indian government announced the demonetisation of all Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes, introducing new Rs 500 and Rs 2,000 notes in their place.
According to the Specified Bank Notes (Cessation of Liabilities) Act 2017, starting December 31, 2016, it became illegal for anyone to knowingly hold, transfer, or receive these demonetised banknotes.
However, the act does allow individuals to keep a maximum of 10 old notes, or up to 25 for research, study, or numismatic purposes.
How did people respond?
One commenter pointed out that old notes can be exchanged at the Reserve Bank of India, but it seems that it can be done only up to the legal limit of 10 notes per person.
Someone quipped about the risks of hiding cash, saying, ¡°Can you imagine hiding money for years, only to find it during Diwali cleaning?¡±
Another user humorously added, ¡°This is why my wife doesn¡¯t let me handle money!¡±
Many viewers resonated with the experience, with one stating, ¡°Now I¡¯m curious about what I might find while cleaning for Diwali!¡±
