The festival signifies a change in season, as from this day the Sun begins its movement from Dakshinayana (South) to Uttarayana (North) hemisphere, marking the official end of winters. On this day, farmers across India pay tribute to lord Sun, and wish for a good crop.

Makar Sankranti is also celebrated by various names in different region in the country, Magh Bihu in Assam, Maghi in Punjab, Maghi Saaji in Himachal Pradesh, Maghi Sangrand or Uttarain (Uttarayana) in Jammu, Sakraat in Haryana, Sukarat in central India, Pongal in Tamil Nadu, Uttarayan in Gujarat, etc.

According to Hindu mythology, on this special day Lord Surya goes to his son Lord Shani, at that time Lord Shani is representing Capricorn. To celebrate the healthy relationship between father and son, despite differences, Makar Sankranti was given importance. It is believed that when a father visits his son on this special day, his conflicts get resolved and positivity gets shared with happiness and prosperity. Symbolizes starting work in a new way. On the day of Makar Sankranti, from sunrise to sunset, the environment is more conscious, that is, there is divine awareness in the environment, so those who are doing spiritual practice can take advantage of this consciousness.

How to celebrate Makar Sankranti?

The festival of Makar Sankranti is very important for the farmers, on this day all the farmers harvest their crops. Makar Sankranti is the only festival of India which is celebrated on 14th or 15th January every year. This is the day when the sun moves towards the north. For Hindus, the sun is a symbol of light, strength and knowledge. Makar Sankranti festival inspires everyone to move from darkness to light.

In the auspicious time of Makar Sankranti, bathing and charity have special significance. On this day people bathe in a holy river by applying jaggery and sesame seeds. After this, after offering water to Lord Surya, people worshiped and prayed to him for their good future. After this jaggery, sesame, blanket, fruits etc. are donated. On the day of Makar Sankranti kites are also flown at many places. Along with this, dishes made from til are consumed on this day. On this day, people make khichdi and offer it to Lord Sun, and also donate. Due to which this festival is also known as Khichdi.

Surya Namaskar demonstration programme for around millions of people globally

On January 14, under Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav, The Ministry of AYUSH is all set for the global Surya Namaskar Demonstration programme and Govt expects 1 crore to participate in the programme. Minister of AYUSH, Sarbananda Sonowal on Wednesday said that the Surya Namaskar demonstration on Makar Sankranti is more relevant in the current resurgence of COVID-19.

"It is a proven fact that Surya Namaskar builds up vitality and immunity and therefore is able to keep corona at bay," he said. "The Ministry of Ayush has launched this Programme under the direction and guidance of Prime Minister Shri Narender Modi," he added. Speaking on the Surya Namashkar programme, Minister of State for AYUSH, Dr Mahendra Munjapara said that Surya Namaskar rejuvenates Mind and body. "Yoga effects on molecular genetics are being studied," he said. Secretary Ayush Vaidya Rajesh Kotecha said, "It is Surya Namaskar for Vitality, Jeevani Shakti Keliye Surya Namaskar", he said.
