The latest National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) data reveals heartbreaking details concerning suicides and crimes related to women in India.
In 2021, a year in which there were 1,64,033 suicides reported in India, Maharashtra had the greatest rate of suicides among all the states, followed by Tamil Nadu and Madhya Pradesh.
According to the latest report of the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), professional or career-related problems, a sense of isolation, abuse, violence, family problems, mental disorders, addiction to alcohol, financial loss, and chronic pain are the main reasons behind incidents of suicide in the country.
In 2021, 1,64,033 suicides were reported in India, a 7.2 percent increase over 2020 (1,53,052).The rate of suicide has increased by 6.2 percent.
"Majority of suicides were reported in Maharashtra (22,207), followed by 18,925 suicides in Tamil Nadu, 14,965 suicides in Madhya Pradesh, 13,500 suicides in West Bengal, and 13,056 suicides in Karnataka, accounting for 13.5 percent, 11.5 percent, 9.1 percent, 8.2 percent and 8 percent of total suicides respectively," the report said.
These five states together accounted for 50.4 percent of the suicides reported in the country. The remaining 49.6 percent of cases came from 23 states and eight Union territories.
Uttar Pradesh, the most populous state (with a 16.9-percent share of the country¡¯s population), has reported a comparatively lower percentage share of suicidal deaths, accounting for only 3.6 percent of the suicides reported in the country.
Delhi, the most populous Union Territory, has reported the highest number of suicides (2,840) among the Union territories, followed by Puducherry (504).
A total of 25,891 suicides were reported in the 53 megacities of the country in 2021.
The rate of suicide ¡ª the number of suicides per one-lakh population ¡ª has been widely accepted as a standard yardstick for comparison. The all-India rate of suicides was 12 in 2021.
The Andaman and Nicobar Islands reported the highest rate of suicide (39.7), followed by Sikkim (39.2), Puducherry (31.8), Telangana (26.9), and Kerala (26.9).
Delhi is most unsafe for women; two minors were raped every day last year:
NCRB data revealed two minor girls were raped every day last year in the national capital, which was the most unsafe metropolitan city for women across the country, according to the latest report by NCRB.
Delhi also recorded 13,892 crimes against women in 2021, a significant surge of more than 40% compared to 2020, when the figure was 9,782, the data showed.
The cases against women in Delhi accounted for 32.20 percent of total crimes in the category among all 19 metropolitan cities, according to the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) data.
Delhi was followed by the financial capital, Mumbai, which saw 5,543 such instances, and Bengaluru, with 3,127 cases.
Mumbai and Bengaluru accounted for 12.76 percent and 7.2 percent of total crimes in 19 cities, respectively.
The national capital has also reported the highest number of cases of crimes against women in the categories related to kidnapping (3948), cruelty by husbands (4674), and girlchild rapes (833) as compared to other metropolitan cities with over two million population in 2021.
The data showed that over two girls were raped daily in Delhi in 2021.
The national capital registered 13,982 crimes against women in 2021, while the total crime in all 19 metropolitan cities was 43,414, according to the report.
