Over 1.53 Lakh People Died Of Suicide While COVID-19 Killed 1.49 Lakh In India In 2020
India reported more than 153 lakh suicides last year ¡ª the highest in the last 10 years. The coronavirus infection on the other hand killed close to 149 lakh people in 2020. Illness was attributed to being the biggest reason for suicide but daily wage workers made up the largest share of total suicides.
2020 was among the deadliest years on record worldwide due to the spread of the coronavirus pandemic.
India reported more than 1.53 lakh suicides last year ¡ª the highest in the last 10 years, according to the latest report by National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB).
The coronavirus infection, on the other hand, killed close to 1.49 lakh people in 2020, as per data from the union health ministry.
Illness was attributed to being the biggest reason for suicide, but daily wage workers made up the largest share of total suicides, shows NCRB data.
A total of 37,666 daily wage workers died by suicide in 2020 ¡ª accounting for 25 per cent of total suicides.
Illness was the most attributed cause, contributing to 18 per cent (27,623) of total suicides, with the figure coming to over one lakh.
More men died of suicide accounting for nearly 71 per cent of total suicides. While nearly 45,000 women died by suicide.
Out of the total number, 22 were transgenders.
