It is believed that the founder of Sikhism and first of ten gurus of Sikhs, 'Guru Nanak Dev Ji¡¯ was born on April 15, 1469, at Rai Bhoi Ki Talwandi, now called Nankana Sahib, which is in Sekhpura district of modern-day Pakistan. But according to the Sikh community, the first guru and founder of Sikhism was born on the full moon day of the lunar month of Kartik, which every year falls in October or November of the Gregorian calendar.
Guru Nanak Dev Ji was born at a time when there was no centrally organised power in India. Foreign invaders were attacking the country. Superstitions were spread all around in the name of religion. At that time, Guru Nanak proved to be a great philosopher and won the hearts of millions of people with his sweet and simple speech. In very simple language, he explained to the world the meaning of "Ek Omkar," which means God is one and all human beings are brothers of each other.
Born to parents Mehta Kalu and Mata Tripta, it is believed that, from a young age, Guru Nanak Dev Ji was very different from the other young children.
Guru Nanak Dev Ji, who founded Sikhism in the 15th century, is regarded as a spiritual teacher. It is believed that he could connect to God through sincere prayers at that time, and he also never encouraged traditions that included sacrifices. He started writing the sacred Sikh scripture, the Guru Granth Sahib, and wrote 974 hymns in it that brought enlightenment to this world.
The main verses from the Guru Granth Sahib elaborate that the creator of the universe was one. His verses also propagate selfless service to humanity, prosperity, and social justice for all, irrespective of any demographic differences. Sikhism also forbids the concepts of messengers and reincarnation. The role of a guru as a spiritual and social master forms the basis of Sikh religion.
Guru Nanak Devi devoted his life to attacking formal rituals, caste, and practises that didn¡¯t make any sense. This is the simplest way you can find meaning and purpose in your own life¡ªby cutting out the clutter of what society says you should do.
