Disney¡¯s 1938 refusal letter sparks controversy over women¡¯s role in creative fields.
A 1938 rejection letter addressed to a young woman seeking a creative role at Walt Disney has recently become a viral sensation online.
This letter underscores the constraints placed on women, restricting them to roles that curtailed their potential and excluded them from creative opportunities at the time.
Its circulation has sparked widespread discussion on social media about historical gender biases and the limitations women faced in pursuing creative careers during that era.
What Is Gone Viral From 1938?
A user on the Reddit community r/Damnthatsinteresting shared a letter stating that "women do not do any of the creative work in connection with preparing the cartoons for the screen, as that work is performed entirely by young men.
For this reason girls are not considered for the training school." The letter is directed to Miss Ford, who reportedly applied for a position in the inking and painting department of the US film company.
The company informed the applicant about the limited scope of available positions for women at Disney, stating, "The only work open to women consists of tracing the characters on clear celluloid sheets with India ink and filling in the tracings on the reverse side with paint according to directions."
The letter further detailed the application process for the company's painting and inking division, stating, "In order to apply for a position as 'Inker' or 'Painter,' it is necessary that one appear at the Studio, bringing samples to come to Hollywood with the above specifically in view, no there are really very few openings in comparison with the number of girls who apply."
