With Baby On The Way & Money Tight, Canadian Woman's Desi In-laws Ask For iPhones. She Turns To Reddit For Help

When people move out of their homeland in search of a better life and get settled there, it's common for parents back home to think they are doing well. More so when you have a wife, a house and there's a baby on the way.

But the real struggles of starting a life in a totally different country are not at all that easy, and it doesn't get better even if a person appears to be settled.

Such a family posted a rather bizarre question on Reddit, which left the users feeling sad about the situation. Here's what happened.

Canadian woman's desi in-laws ask for iPhones when she's about to have a baby

A Reddit post, in r/india, by user u/antacidtrip123 raises a rather awkward complaint.

In the post that is titled, "About to have a baby, and husbands parents want new iPhones..," a Canadian woman who is expecting a child soon, complains that her Indian in-laws are asking for two iPhones as gifts.

Now parents living back in India asking for some gifts from a son who lives in Canada is not a bizarre phenomenon, but that is not the problem here. In the post, the wife highlights that the couple is not doing so well financially, and with added expenses of the baby the gift might not be a good idea.

The Indian husband, in turn, didn't think so, so the lady took to Reddit to find answers.

She wrote in the post, "Help me understand. I¡¯m Canadian and my husband is Indian. We live in Canada and his family is in India. We will welcome our first baby in a few weeks. His family thinks because we live in Canada, we must be rich. In reality, we are very frugal and have very little to spare right now with the baby coming. Today his parents asked us to purchase them 2 iPhones as gifts. It shocked me that my husband actually wants to do this, when it is literally taking from his own wife and child during a financially sensitive time."

In the end, the lady asks Reddit users, "Im trying to understand if this is normal to ask for a large gift right before the birth of a child. I want to be sensitive to the culture and our duties to his parents."

Reddit users are obviously not happy with the in-laws

The post got a lot of attention on the discussion website.

A user who had a suggestion for the lady wrote, "Who asks for gifts? Tell them 'Mom, Dad your grandchild is the best gift we can give you. iPhones are nothing in comparison.' In India, you have to learn the language of Bullsh*t very early in life."

An Indian user had a rather quirky solution. She wrote, "In India we value a pregnant lady's wishes a lot.. tell them you are craving 70 gms gold.. idk why my reply got so many upvotes..thank you for the award."

"It is definitely not. Your husband should fix the expectations of his parents. In India it will be the baby who gets gifts from relatives," wrote another user.
