Watch As This Octopus Changes Colours While Possibly Dreaming, It's Mesmerising!
In the marine world, octopuses are known one of the most intelligent creatures. Their most prominent ability is how they can blend in with the environment to either catch prey or hide from predators.
But what about the colour shift that happens while they are sleeping? All animals as we know it, experience dreams or REM cycles much like humans.
In dogs the most common signs of them dreaming is to see them twitch or run in sleep.
But have you ever wondered how to spot a dreaming octopus?
That's what this marine biologist amusingly narrates in this clip from PBS¡¯s ¡°Octopus: Making Contact."
David Scheel of Alaska Pacific University explains the colour changes of a sleeping octopus named Heidi. At the start of the clip, the napping octopus was a pearly-white colour. But as it sleeps dark patterns appear and constantly keep shifting.
According to Scheel, cited by PBS, the dreaming could make for a better understanding of the bond between an animal and its owner.
¡°Octopuses followed a different evolutionary path, making them different from all other intelligent animals on this planet [...] I am less intrigued by the differences and more interested in our similarities. What kind of a connection is possible with an animal that has three hearts and blue blood running through its veins? " he says.
The octopus is changing colours probably because it is dreaming and that too, dreaming about hunting and eating its prey says marine biologist.
In the documentary, Heidi demonstrates the ability to solve puzzles, use tools and escape through small spaces.
