Woman faces Rs 19 lakh fine for single pink door in her house
Miranda Dickson, from Edinburgh, Scotland, is facing an astronomical fine for painting her Georgian front door. As a part of the house¡¯s renovation, Dickson painted the front door pink.
The 48-year-old has branded the council¡¯s rules as ¡°30 years out of date.¡±
Dickson, the mother of two, inherited the house from her parents in 2019. She said the door often attracts the attention of passersby, with many Instagram users stopping to pose for a picture in front of it.
However, the Edinburgh City Council has objected to the colour and said the door was ¡°not in keeping with the historic character¡± of the listed building.
Miranda Dickson labels the situation ¡®malicious and petty'
Dickson is not happy with the council's stand on the issue and said that the complaint about the door was ¡®malicious and petty.'
¡°There¡¯s cities in the UK like Bristol, Notting Hill and Harrogate which are brightly coloured. Coming home and seeing my front door gives me joy, I¡¯m proud of it,¡± Dickson was quoted as saying.
The council has, however, informed her that she must repaint the door to a more suitable colour, which should be "dark and muted". Dickson said the letter stated her door was "bright pink" but claimed it was light pink. "The letter told me to paint it white, which goes against the guidelines of dark and muted. It's ludicrous," she said.
Dickson's home is located in Edinburgh's New Town¡¯s World Heritage conservation area. This means there are certain rules around what changes can be made to properties in the area. The Old and New Towns of Edinburgh gained UNESCO World Heritage Status in 1995.
She now plans to repaint the door a dark red.
