Before she became the first female engineer to work at Tata Group¡¯s TELCO, Sudha Murthy is known to have written an angry letter to the company¡¯s then chairman, JRD Tata. But despite that, not only did she work at the company, she even, to date, values one piece of advice that JRD Tata once gave her.
JRD Tata¡¯s Advice To Sudha Murty
It was more than four decades ago, in the year 1982, when Sudha Murthy was leaving TELCO, at a time when her husband Narayana Murthy was starting Infosys.
While leaving TELCO (Tata Engineering and Locomotive Company), Sudha Murty stopped by to say goodbye to the company's chairman, JRD Tata. It was at that time that JRD Tata gave her one piece of advice that she still values today. JRD Tata had said, " When you are successful, you must give back to society. Society gives us so much; we must reciprocate. I wish you all the best," as once quoted by Sudha Murty.

A Lesson For Her Husband Narayana Murthy
Besides that one valuable piece of advice from Tata, Sudha Murthy also once recalled a time when she was waiting for her husband, Narayana Murthy, late into the evening one day, and JRD Tata waited with her. "Then I saw Murthy, and I rushed out. JRD Tata called and said, "Young lady, tell your husband never to make his wife wait again," she recalled.

Another Valuable Piece Of Advice She Still Remembers
Another piece of advice Sudha Murty still remembers about JRD Tata is that ¡°money should be used for public good and not private good; you are a trustee of that money and you don't own it. "I believe in it," Murthy said in an interview with Forbes, as an ET report mentioned. "Because why does God choose only some of us to handle money while there are many people who work harder than us? So that we can help others."
