Bajaj Auto is planning to take its electric Chetak to global markets. The company has officially registered the electric scooter¡¯s design in Europe. The patent for the Chetak has been registered at the (EUIPO) European Union Intellectual Property Office in February this year. Now Bajaj Auto has received a registration validity for it until November 2029.
To recall, the revised version of the Chetak was launched in India in January this year. The electric scooter became an instant hit in the country, also much thanks to the nostalgia associated with it. Bajaj Auto had, at the time, revealed its intentions to make the electric two-wheeler a global product.
Upon its launch in Europe, Bajaj is expected to export the electric scooter from its Indian facilities. However, the timeline for the same is not confirmed, as even the sales in India have been postponed citing the Coronavirus induced lockdown.
For now, the electric scooter is available in two variants - Urbane and Premium. While the former is the entry-level trim, the Premium variant comes as the top-end model of the electric scooter.
Chetak is not the only electric two-wheeler being eyed by Bajaj as a global product. The e-scooter¡¯s platform will be used to build KTM and Husqvarna electric scooters, that will eventually be sold in the global markets.
At the time, Rajiv Bajaj had commented "The best way to be a global company is to produce platforms which are modular and flexible on one hand and on the other should be leveraged by different brands.¡± He further confirmed, ¡°going forward, we can use this platform for both KTM and Husqvarna scooters."
With the company poised to start the deliveries of the Chetak soon, it is only a matter of time when the company starts retailing it in international markets. In the post Covid-19 era when people will prefer personal mobility options over public transport, the electric Chetak might just be the perfect option for several potential buyers.
