Delhi government is looking for yet another way to boost the use of electric vehicles in the union territory. After appointing several electric buses in the state transport and allotting a fund of Rs 100 crore, a new report indicates that the Delhi government will be launching a scheme to promote EV use by delivery services.
With a humongous amount of goods and services now enabling doorstep deliveries to the customers, it only makes sense to push them towards using EVs for the same. Delhi government will be using incentives to do this, as per the Dialogue and Development Commission of Delhi (DDCD).
¡°From groceries to food and from clothes to household items ¨C everything is getting delivered to people¡¯s doorstep. Tapping into this delivery sector in Delhi and making them shift to the electric vehicle segment could be a game changer in green mobility and curbing air pollution. We have had several meetings in this regard, and the stakeholders are positive about the move,¡± said Jasmine Shah, vice-chairperson of Dialogue and Development Commission of Delhi.

The incentives will be allotted (if so) under the Delhi Electric Vehicle Policy poised to be brought into effect soon. Apart from targeting the delivery players for the use of EVs, the Dialogue and Development Commission of Delhi is looking for more such ways for the purpose. For this, the department on Tuesday collaborated with non-profit group Rocky Mountain Institute.
¡°Under the initiative, innovative ideas will be invited from stakeholders on four broad categories ¡ª electric mobility, non-motorised transport, shared mobility and last mile connectivity ¡ª for conceiving and piloting sustainable solutions to overcome local problems in Delhi,¡± Shah said.
The 10 best ideas will then be shortlisted and further discussed at an ¡®urban mobility lab¡¯ to be hosted on June 26-27 as per Shah.
Delhi has been tackling alarming rates of air pollution over the years and the biggest contributor to this is the transportation means in the region. Delhi government is now looking for ways to replace such polluting modes of transportation with greener alternatives. Recently, DMRC had announced the appointment of electric two-wheelers for emission free last mile connectivity. Several charging stations had also been set up in the Lutyens¡¯ area for powering the EVs used by government officials and citizens alike.
