Was #MeToo movement just a social media trend? It has been more than a year now that the #MeToo reached India and several big names from the industry came under scanner. But what has really changed after that? Apart from a fear that now exists in the eyes and minds of the predators, were those who were accused and those who bared their hearts out after years got justice?
One popular name from the B-Town who became the eye of the storm after about five women accused him of sexual misconduct was Anu Malik. The music composer-singer who was kicked out of Indian Idol, a show he was judging a year back, only to join back a year later. Now, after people including Sona Mohapatra, one of the accusers, raised voiced against Sony TV's decision, it is said that he may be removed as the judge on the show yet again.?
When all this happened, Anu Malik didn't say much apart from just denying the accusations against him. Anu Malik only said that whatever was being said agaianst him was untrue. For the first time, he has now bared his heart out to talk about the entire #MeToo episode.?
"It has been over a year that I have been accused of something that I haven¡¯t done. I have been silent all this while as I was waiting for the truth to surface on its own. But I realise that my silence on the matter has been misconstrued as my weakness.
Ever since the false and unverified allegations were levelled against me, it has not only ruined my reputation, but affected me and my family¡¯s mental health, left us traumatized and tarnished my career. I feel helpless, like I am being cornered and suffocated.
It¡¯s disgraceful that at this age, at this stage in my life I have to watch the most slanderous words and horrifying incidents being associated with my name.
Why wasn¡¯t this spoken about before? Why do these allegations resurface only when I am back on television, which is currently my only source of livelihood?
Being a father of two daughters, I can¡¯t imagine committing the acts that I am accused of, let alone do it.
Fighting a battle of social media is an endless process, at the end of which nobody wins. If this keeps on continuing, I will have no option but to knock on the doors of the courts to safeguard myself..."
