Gadar 2 has just become Sunny Deol's highest-grossing movie ever in just two days after release. The movie has minted Rs 83.10 crores. Gadar, which earned about Rs 77 crores, was his previous highest-grossing film ever.
Sunny wouldn't have set this record had Govinda accepted the offer!
Director Anil Sharma had offered the film to Govinda in the 90s when he was working the star in?Maharaja.?
Govinda rejected it because he thought the film had too many abuses at that point in time.?
"Jis waqt Anil Sharma mujhe suna rahe they na film, usmein itni saari gaaliyan thi. Maine kaha yaar main toh kisi aadmi se panga nahin leta, tum yaar idhar udhar kidhar kidhar desh desh... kya kya keh de rahe ho. Maine kaha meri mummy ne fixed cheezein keh di hain. Meri mummy ne kaha hai ki Govind... ek toh tumhare paas doosra Govind nahin hai... jo ho tum ho. Jo tum hardwork karoge toh aisa risk nahi loge kisi bhi cheez mein ki aisa lage ki ye hai toh star parantu yeh apni mayar se aage nikal ke bahut kuch kar raha hai.?
"Ya fir tum muskurate raho dance aur gaana karo... lagega ki Govinda hai. Toh woh mummy ka wish tha toh main picture nahin kiya woh. Bahut gaaliyan thi sir main yahaan discuss bhi nahin kar sakta," Govinda revealed this in Aap Ki Adalat in 2019.
Not just Govinda, the entire Bollywood had rejected Gadar: Ek Prem Katha when it was first released. People called it "Gutter: Ek Prem Kath". Who knew this film will gain an iconic status that will prompt the makers to release a sequel?
On the other hand, director Anil Sharma denied offering the movie to Govinda.?
"He perhaps misunderstood that I wanted to cast him in the film, and that's how the rumours originated," he told Rj?Siddharth Kannan.?"I would work with him in a heartbeat, on not one but 10 films, but I never wanted to do Gadar with him. Sunny Deol was the first and last choice for the central role. And as far as the heroines are concerned, I had approached several big actresses of the time; Neelam was definitely not one of them. They had all some problem or the other. Some didn't like the story, others didn't like us. Some had their own personal agendas, some didn't want to do period films."
Not just Gadar, Govinda rejected these blockbuster movies as well - Devdas (the role of Chunnilal), Chandini (Rishi Kapoor's role) and Taal (Anil Kapoor's role). He rejected Taal because he didn't like the title of the film. He rejected Devdas as didn't want to play a supporting role and had demanded Sanjay Leela Bhansali to make Shah Rukh Khan call him.? He rejected Chandini because he didn't want to play a wheelchair-bound character.
