Despite the Cannes audience's enthusiastic 8-minute standing ovation, Trump's team swiftly condemned the film as fiction, declaring intentions to sue to block its US release. Trump campaign spokesman Steven Cheung labelled the film's depiction of Trump as "blatantly false" and "pure fiction," alleging it sensationalised debunked falsehoods. Following the world premiere of Ali Abbasi's film, Cheung confirmed to Variety on Monday their plans for legal action.
Director Abbasi, speaking to the press at Cannes, urged Trump's team to reserve judgement until they had seen the film, suggesting that Trump might be surprised by its portrayal. The film's cast includes Sebastian Stan as Trump and Jeremy Strong as his lawyer and mentor, Roy Cohn, but release dates for the US and worldwide are yet to be announced.
