It is both lauded and trolled how the entertainment industry has some prominent families in positions and their descendants continuing to enjoy the fame of their ancestors. Some call it nepotism, others think of it as ¡®earned privilege¡¯.
It's one thing if their connections in the movie business help them get work but it is daring if two people with the same blood relation work together. Bollywood has some of these father-child duos who took up a project jointly and proved that no amount of criticism can stop them to make the best use of an opportunity.
1. Boney Kapoor And Janhvi Kapoor
Boney Kapoor is a well-known producer in the Indian film industry. He has produced some popular films like Hamara Dil Aapke Paas Hai (2000), No Entry (2005), Wanted (2009) and Tevar (2015). He married the late actress Sridevi in 1996 and has two Kapoor daughters named Janhvi and Khushi.
In recent times, even after Janhvi was a target of trolls for being a nepotism product,?Boney Kapoor knew no hesitation in backing his daughter and producing her latest film Mili.?The father-daughter duo are often spotted together, quite frequently since Mili was announced. For the unversed, Boney also produced Sridevi¡¯s Mr. India (1987) and MOM (2017).??
2. Rakesh Roshan And Hrithik Roshan
Veteran actor, director and producer Rakesh Roshan is known for helming evergreen films like Karan Arjun (1995), Khoon Bhari Maang (1988), Khudgarz (1987) and Koyla (1997).
When his son, actor Hrithik Roshan was getting launched in this industry, Rakesh without any doubt directed and produced his debut film Kaho Na Pyaar Hai (2000). He didn¡¯t stop at that. Rakesh went on to back Hrithik¡¯s projects like Koi Mil Gaya (2003), Krrish (2006), Krrish 3 (2013), Kaabil (2017) and the upcoming Krrish 4.
3. Raj Kapoor And Rishi Kapoor
The Kapoors strive to do their best as they have been in this business for the longest time. Every other member of their family is a superstar of their own time and it was veteran artist Raj Kapoor who built the base for his son Rishi Kapoor.
Rishi's brief screen appearances in films like Shree 420 (1955) and Mera Naam Joker (1970) were Raj Kapoor¡¯s own projects. Further, when Rishi made his debut in a full-length film named Bobby in 1973, it was directed and produced by Raj Kapoor himself.
4. Anil Kapoor And Sonam Kapoor
Anil Kapoor who worked prominently as an actor in Bollywood has also been a producer. Amongst his daughter, Sonam Kapoor¡¯s first few films, Aisha (2010), Anil Kapoor helmed the producer¡¯s seat.
He further funded Sonam¡¯s Khoobsurat (2014) and Veerey Di Wedding (2018). He also acted alongside his son, Harshvardhan Kapoor in films like AK Vs AK (2020) and Thar (2022) and with Sonam in Ek Ladki Ko Dekha To Aisa Laga (2019).
5. David Dhawan And Varun Dhawan
Although Bhediya actor Varun Dhawan saw a breakthrough debut with Karan Johar¡¯s Student Of The Year (2012), he always had the back of his father and veteran filmmaker David Dhawan.
David directed Varun¡¯s second film in Bollywood, Main Tera Hero (2014). He then directed his son's Judwaa 2 (2017) and Coolie No. 1 (2002). Varun¡¯s 2016 film Dishoom also featuring John Abraham was helmed by his brother Rohit Dhawan.
6. Dharmendra And His Sons
Veteran actor Dharmendra founded the production house Vijayta Films in 1983. The entertainment company started its journey by backing his elder son Sunny Deol¡¯s debut film, Betaab (1983). Vijayta Films further helmed Sunny¡¯s multiple projects including Ghayal (1990), Dillagi (1999), Indian (2001), Apne (2007), Ghayal Once Again (2016) and Yamla Pagla Deewana: Phir Se (2018).
Dharmendra¡¯s production house also backed his younger son Bobby Deol¡¯s debut film, Barsaat (1995). Bobby¡¯s further projects like 23rd March 1931: Shaheed (2002) and Chamku (2008) were too backed by his father's production house.
7. Mahesh Bhatt And Pooja Bhatt
One of the most controversial filmmakers of Bollywood, Mahesh Bhatt has some evergreen films in his name. Out of all the achievements, Bhatt didn¡¯t hesitate in framing his eldest daughter Pooja Bhatt¡¯s acting career. Pooja¡¯s debut film Daddy (1989) was Mahesh¡¯s directorial.
Furtherin, Mahesh made films like Dil Hai Ki Manta Nahi and Sadak (1991) for her. Even after vigorously directing dozens of Pooja¡¯s films, the Zakhm actress¡¯ career is said to be a failure. When Mahesh tried casting his younger daughter Alia Bhatt in Sadak 2, that film also shattered at the box office. Maybe it wasn¡¯t his fate to back his blood in Bollywood.
8. Yash Chopra And His Sons
Veteran filmmaker Yash Chopra has two sons, Aditya Chopra and Uday Chopra. When Uday started his career as an assistant director, it was from Yash¡¯s films. He worked with his father on projects like Lamhe (1991), Parampara (1993) and Darr (1993).
When Uday went for his acting debut with Mohabbatein (2000), the film was written and directed by his brother Aditya and produced by his father. Yash¡¯s elder son Aditya was lucky to have taken over Yash Raj Films after his father¡¯s death. He with his father helmed projects like Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi (2008) and more.
9. Gulshan Kumar And Kids
The Father of T-Series, Gulshan Kumar is a known and hailed name in the world of music and production. Climbing the stairs of his music album, his kids, Bhushan Kumar, Tulsi Kumar and Khushali Kumar entered the business of entertainment.
Where Gulshan¡¯s son has taken over the management of T-Series, Tulsi and Khushali have aced their career by singing songs for this label. Even when Khushali was a successful fashion designer, she didn¡¯t feel like missing her golden spoon and is even set to make her acting debut soon with Dahi Cheeni.
10. Tahir Hussain And Aamir Khan
Filmmaker Tahir Hussain was a popular all-rounder artist of his time. He had four kids including Bollywood's perfectionist Aamir Khan. Tahir wrote and directed Aamir¡¯s Tum Mere Ho (1990). He also produced Khan¡¯s projects like Hum Hain Rahi Pyaar Ke (1993) and Madhosh (1994) where Aamir acted as a child artist.
When Tahir¡¯s other son Faisal Khan was aiming for his Bollywood debut with Madhosh (1994), he took the seat of an assistant producer. For the unversed, Aamir¡¯s Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak (1988) was a film backed by his family. Where Faisal played a minor villain in it, Qayamat was produced by his uncle Nasir Hussain and directed by his cousin Mansoor Khan.
11. Gulzar And Meghna
Veteran artist Gulzar has served the world with his iconic and evergreen songs, poems and whatnot that involved inks and thoughts. His daughter Meghna Gulzar also walked his lane. She made her Bollywood debut alongside her father as a screenwriter in 1999¡¯s Hu Tu Tu which starred Suniel Shetty and Tabu.
Gulzar further wrote Just Married (2007), and Dus Kahaaniyan (2007) for Meghna to direct. He further gave his words to turn immortal in the forms of songs in Meghna¡¯s films such as Filhaal (2002), Talvaar (2015), Raazi (2018) and Chapaak (2020).
12. Yash Johar And Karan Johar
The veteran producer and founder of Dharma Productions, Yash Johar had it all created for his son Karan Johar. All of the films that Karan went on to direct or produce, had a share of his father¡¯s production house. As a solo producer, Yash backed Karan¡¯s projects like Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998), Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham (2001) and Kal Ho Na Ho (2003).
13. Sunil Dutt And Sanjay Dutt
Veteran actor Sunil Dutt turned producer in his early 60s and for what, history has said it. His son Sanjay Dutt¡¯s first appearance as a child actor was in Sunil¡¯s Reshma Aur Shera (1971). When Sanjay made his debut as a lead in Rocky (1981), the film was directed by his father. Later Sunil¡¯s close friends in the industry took over Sanjay's career sky-high.
14. Veeru Devgan and Ajay Devgn
Ace action director of Bollywood Veeru Devgan, when tried his hands at filmmaking, it was for his son and actor Ajay Devgn. Veeru wrote and produced Ajay¡¯s film Hindustan Ki Kasam (1999). He also backed Ajay¡¯s Jigar and Dil Kya Kare in the same year. The duo further worked together on projects like 1997¡¯s Ishq and Itihaas, Jaan (1996), Haqeeqat (1995), Dilwale (1994) and Divya Shakti (1993).
15. Sunny Deol And Karan Deol
Actor Sunny Deol backed his son Karan Deol during the early years of his career. In the first notable collaboration, Karan assisted Sunny in directing Yamla Pagla Deewana 2 (2013). Further, Sunny Deol took the director¡¯s seat for his son Karan¡¯s acting debut in 2019¡¯s Pal Pal Dil Ke Paas.
