Have you been waiting all day to exercise? A new study suggests that if you're aiming to lose weight, the best time to work out is during the day especially early in the morning.
At Franklin Pierce University in New Hampshire, researchers discovered that the connection between exercise and weight loss was most powerful in the early morning compared to midday or evening workouts.
Professor Rebecca Krukowski, who was not associated with the study, said, ¡°This is exciting new research that is consistent with a common tip for meeting exercise goals ¡ª that is, schedule exercise in the morning before emails, phone calls or meetings that might distract you.¡±
The study discovered that engaging in moderate to vigorous exercise between 7 a.m. and 9 a.m. is the most effective time for weight loss.
The study was published in the journal Obesity.
Previous studies have examined how often, how hard, and how long someone exercises, but researchers aimed to investigate whether the timing of exercise plays a role in the results of physical activity.
They analysed data from 5,285 individuals using information from the 2003¨C2004 and 2005¨C2006 cycles of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
The researchers categorised physical activity patterns into three groups: morning, mid-day, and evening.
Additionally, participants shared their dietary habits through self-reported dietary recall. This information showed that those in the morning group tended to have a healthier diet and consumed less energy daily relative to their body weight compared to others.
The results revealed that individuals who exercised early in the morning had a lower body mass index (BMI) and smaller waist circumference compared to the other groups. Surprisingly, this particular group was also the most sedentary among the three.
