Animal welfare organisation, People For Ethical Treatment Of Animals (PETA) ?has declared the southern Indian city of Chennai as the ¡®Most Vegan-Friendly City 2018¡¯.
The city was honoured for providing an environment in which vegan-friendly establishments can thrive. PETA India sent a letter to Chennai Corporation Commissioner, Dr D. Karthikeyan thanking him for promoting more environment-friendly practices.
While Pune bagged this award last year, Bengaluru was given this award the first year when this award category had started. PETA has been awarding different states the ¡®Most Vegan-Friendly¡¯ award for three years now.

A PETA spokesperson told Times Of India that Chennai was a natural choice for this award and there has been an increase in the number of Vegan businesses and restaurants in the city. Many companies too had come with vegetarian products and many organise vegan potlucks regularly.
The honour was specifically given in November because this month is recognised as the World Vegan Month. PETA congratulated the state with a certificate because it boasts of a variety of cuisine. Starting from Chinese, Thai, Italian and fusion options including its famous gourmet vegan-meat ¡°butcher¡± that uses highly nutritional soya and mushrooms to provide high quality gourmet food to people at an affordable price.

It also sells juice and nut milk products. Apart from this, there are also many Vegan clothing stores that design luxurious clothes to inspire a ¡°cruelty-free¡± lifestyle. 100 per cent natural cork fabrics are used to sell daily accessories like handbags, wallets, sleeves and travel accessories. From food products to vegan lifestyle essentials are sold to promote a sustainable lifestyle.
PETA also gave credit to SPI cinemas for offering its visitors date-sweetened almond milk because it contains 50% less calories than cow¡¯s milk. Students studying at the German International School are served with only 100% vegan meals.
PETA India CEO Dr Manilal Valliyate said, ¡°Global interest in the vegan lifestyle has never been higher, and Chennai is leading the country in responding to it.¡±
PETA India ¨C whose motto reads, in part, that ¡°animals are not ours to eat¡± ¨C notes that every person who goes vegan spares nearly 200 animals a year daily suffering and a terrifying death in today¡¯s meat, egg, and dairy industries.
