CCTV footage of the stabbing of Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Shambhu Dayal has been recovered by the police.?
The video from January 4revealed that the officer was stabbed 12 times by a man, Anish Raj, who was nabbed for an alleged mobile phone theft in West Delhi's Mayapuri.??The 57-year-old constable died four days later on Sunday.
Dayal reached the spot after a woman had complained to the police that Anish had stolen her husband's phone and threatened them. He had found the stolen phone on him, NDTV reported.
The clip shows that the theft accused repeatedly stabbed and punched the cop while many people, including children, stood still and witnessed the act.
Although a woman and some children tried to come close and rescue the ASI, they backed off after the man showed them the knife.?
In the beginning, Dayal can be seen walking with the theft accused. And just when the policeman turns back, the man takes out a knife from underneath his shirt and attacks him.?
Reacting promptly, the police officer catches hold of the man and starts beating him up with a stick.During this, they fall on the road and both manage to get up. The man again stabs and punches the police officer.?
A staffer from the Mayapuri police station was also spotted chasing the accused and overpowering him.?
Shambhu Dayal, from Sikar in Rajasthan, was a father of three - a son and two daughters.His family will be given Rs 1 crore, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal announced today.?
He also paid tribute to the policeman on Twitter."While protecting the public, ASI Shambhu ji did not even care about his life. He became a martyr. We are proud of him. There is no value for his life, but in his honor, we will give an honorarium of one crore rupees to his family," Kejriwal wrote.?
The Delhi Police, in a moving homage, praised Shambhu Dayal for not letting the thief escape.
The Delhi Commission for Women today announced that it will honour the family of the deceased cop at its International Women's Day awards ceremony in March.
"The Delhi Commission for Women salutes the bravery of ASI Shambhu Dayal and stands with his family in this tough time. The commission shall be honouring the bravery of Late Shambhu Dayal on the occasion of its Annual International Women's Day Award Ceremony in March," the panel said, reported PTI.?
DCW chief Swati Maliwal, in a tweet in Hindi, said, "Displaying a great deal of bravery, Delhi Police ASI Shambhu Dayal was martyred while trying to control the accused. He kept fighting till his last breath. It could be seen that at least 50 people were standing there but no one came to his aid. We salute him. This year, DCW will honour his family."
