For the first time in Indian history, elderly citizens have been given the option to 'vote from home' in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.
According to the Election Commission of India, voters aged 85 years and above can cast their votes from the comfort of their homes.
In Punjab, among those eligible to vote from home are more than five thousand voters who are aged between 100 and 119 years.
According to Punjab Chief Electoral Officer Sibin C, there are a total of 205 eligible voters in the state who are above the age of 120. This includes 122 males and 83 females.
Ludhiana district has the highest number of elderly voters, with 77 men and 34 women above the age of 120, followed by Ferozepur district with 24 men and 25 women.
As far as the 5,004 voters aged between 100 and 119 years are concerned, there are 1,917 males and 2,928 females falling within the 100 to 109-year age bracket. Furthermore, there are 59 males and 100 females aged 110 to 119 years.
Punjab has 2,12,71,246 voters, comprising 1,11,92,959 males and 1,00,77,543 females.
Out of this, 4,89,631 are first-time voters aged 18-19.
Punjab will vote for all 13 Lok Sabha seats in the seventh phase on June 1.
The state election office will also make efforts to increase the voting percentage in those areas where turnout was low in previous elections.
Punjab's voting percentage during the 2019 Lok Sabha elections was 65.96 per cent.
The Chief Electoral Officer said a target has been set to achieve a voter turnout of more than 70 per cent.
In an effort to encourage more voters to cast their ballots, the state election office has also announced to serve sweetened water at polling stations to beat the summer heat.
