A man from Meerut, Uttar Pradesh had a narrow escape from a leopard, while he was travelling on a bike.
The incident happened in the early hours of Friday in the Kanker Khera area of Meerut.
The biker, identified as Akshay Thakur was passing through Kanker Khera when the leopard jumped onto the road in front of him from the bushes.
Luckily for the biker, the leopard had run into the bushes on the other side of the road, by the time he reached the spot.
A shocked Thakur stopped his bike for a moment before he proceeded again after the big cat disappeared into the dark.
The entire episode was caught on the CCTV camera of a nearby house.
In the CCTV visuals, the leopard, presumably disturbed by the light and sound of the bike is seen coming out of the bushes as the two-wheeler approaches.
Thakur who noticed the animal after it crossed the road, soon alerted the locals about the presence of the leopard in the area.
After being informed by locals the Forest Department rushed a team to the spot, but could not find the leopard.
On Friday more people reported seeing the leopard, including on the outskirts of a farmhouse.
There are also reports that a dog has been killed by the elusive leopard.
As panic spread among residents, the Forest officials increased their search, and are also using drones to locate the leopard.
According to the Status of Leopards in India report released on Thursday, the leopard population in the Shivalik Hills and Gangetic Plains (SHGP) which comprises of Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Jharkhand stood at 1,109 in 2022.
According to the data released by the National Tiger Conservation Authority India has seen a rise in leopard count from 12,852 in 2018 to 13,874 in 2022.
