A 19-year-old girl from Tamil Nadu who was preparing for the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET) allegedly died by suicide by hanging, the day before the exam.
The girl, identified as Jothi Durga, the daughter of a Tamil Nadu Police officer was found dead inside her home at Armed Reserve Police Quarters in Madurai.
According to her family, Jothi Durga was seen studying till late on Friday night after which she went to bed.?
Preliminary enquiries revealed that the girl was anxious for quite some time over the NEET exam scheduled to be held on Sunday. She appeared last year NEET, but failed to crack the exam.
The girl took the extreme step as she was scared of the exam.
ˇ°You all have so much expectations on me. But I am sorry. In case I fail to secure a medical seat, all your hard work for me will go in vain. I will disappoint you. I am sorry. I am tired,ˇ± she had written in a suicide note to her parents.?
This is the second suicide over NEET in Tamil Nadu this week.
On September 9, another Medical aspirant committed suicide by jumping into a well at Elanthankuzhi village near Senthurai in Ariyalur district.
The youth, identified as Vignesh had earlier cleared the NEET but failed to get a seat in a government medical. He was depressed over writing the exam and committed suicide.
This is the fourth such death in the state with a month.
Earlier this month, a 17-year-old NEET aspirant had also died by suicide in Tamil Nadu's Pudukottai district after being?unable to get her admit card?to appear for the key entrance exams.
In August, another 19-year-old girl from Chennai, who was preparing for NEET had died by suicide.??
The girl was reportedly depressed and took the extreme step as she was scared of the exam.
Tamil Nadu parties, including the ruling AIADMK, has been?opposed to NEET?on grounds that it went against social justice, the backward classes, and interests of rural students who could not afford coaching classes.
On Wednesday, the Supreme Court had refused to entertain a fresh batch of petitions seeking directions to postpone NEET.
While refusing to entertain the petitions, the apex court observed that now everything is over. "Even review petitions have been also dismissed by this Court," the bench said.
A fresh batch of petitions had been filed before the top court seeking to postpone NEET 2020 examination scheduled to be held on September 13 in view of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
