A young man from Dungarpur, Rajasthan hasbeen nabbed for reportedly attempting to deceive others of money and gift cardsover WhatsApp by using images of IAS officer Tina Dabi, who is collectorfrom Jaisalmer.
The matter came to the fore when UrbanImprovement Trust secretary (Rajasthan Administrative Service) Sunita Choudharyreceived a message seeking an Amazon gift card in Tina Dabi¡¯s name.
Explaining further Choudhary said that shereceived a message from the fraudster¡¯s number in impeccable English on Mondayevening, which led her to believe that it was actually Tina Dabi who had textedher.
¡°I thought she had some work. However, thefraudster sought Amazon gift cards from me in the messages. But I don¡¯t useAmazon,¡± Choudhary told India Today.
¡°Still, to confirm, I called up Tina Dabi, who was shocked to hear about the incident,¡± she said.
After learning of the cheating attempt in her name, Jaisalmer collector Tina Dabi immediately informed the Superintendent of Police (SP) about the matter.
The police swung into action and SP Jaisalmertraced the number with the help of a cyber team and found its location inDungarpur district.
The officer then took up the matter with DungarpurSP after which the youth using the number was caught. The arrested youth is nowin police custody and is being questioned.
Jaisalmer district collector Tina Dabi has appealed to people to be wary of messages from unknown numbers. She also saidhas only one official number.
The youth first registered a phone numberon WhatsApp and put up a display picture (DP) of IAS officer Tina Dabi.
Pretending to be Dabi, he would thenmessage unsuspecting people and ask for Amazon gift cards of various amounts.His modus operandi would seem genuine as his texts were in flawless English, India Today reported.
