Amid the continuing claims on social media that migrant workers from Bihar were attacked in Tamil Nadu, the state Police chief has claimed that no such incidents have happened.
Tamil Nadu Director General of Police C Sylendra Babu Thursday clarified that the videos circulating on social media showing alleged attacks on migrant labourers in the state were ¡°false¡± and ¡°mischievous¡±.
According to him, one of the two videos being circulated showed a clash between two groups of migrant workers from Bihar in Tiruppur, while the second was a fight between two local residents of Coimbatore.
The DGP's clarification came after social media claims of attack on migrant workers became a massive issue in Bihar.??
"I have come to know through newspapers about attacks on laborers from Bihar working in Tamil Nadu. I have directed the chief secretary and director general of police of Bihar to talk to the officials of the Tamil Nadu government and ensure the safety of laborers from Bihar living there," Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar had said.
Following the clarification by the Tamil Nadu police, Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Tejashwi Yadav took to Twitter to clear the air over the videos.
"DGP Tamilnadu is categorically stating that it is completely baseless and rumour mongering that migrant workers of Bihar are being targeted in Tamil Nadu. Old video of violence is mischievously being spread stating people of Bihar are no longer safe in Tamil Nadu, creating panic," Yadav said in a Tweet.
The clarification by the Tamil Nadu Police and Bihar Deputy CM did not satisfy the opposition parties in the state.
The opposition BJP on Friday created a stir in the Bihar assembly before staging a walkout, demanding that a team of members of the House should be sent to Tamil Nadu to verify reports of attacks on migrants from Bihar.
Hitting back at the opposition, Deputy CM Yadav challenged them to approach the Centre over the alleged incident if they were not satisfied with the responses of the governments of the two states.
Referring to a video clip that Leader of the Opposition Vijay Kumar Sinha showed on his mobile phone, Yadav asked, "how did you come to know it is of Bihari workers under attack from local Tamils? The only way we can ascertain it is by checking the matter with the authorities there."
