A police constable, Dilip Bharti, has been caught redhanded accepting a bribe of Rs 20,000 at a public park from a rape survivor.
The policeman was caught by the anti-corruption unit of Gorakhpur police near the office of superintendent of police (SP) Azamgarh receiving a bribe from rape survivor for green-signaling her compensation file.
Anti-corruption Gorakhpur unit team Inspector Ramdhari Mishra told The Times of India on March 27, "As per a plan prepared after getting complaint from the rape survivor, Bharti, who is posted in SP Azamgarh office, was called to collect Rs 20,000 bribe money he was demanding at a park near the SP office. When Bharti reached there and was collecting the bribe money, the anti-corruption unit members caught him red-handed."
A case has been registered against him and has been handed over to the Kotwali police.
The social welfare department had sanctioned a compensation for the rape survivor but the file was pending at the SP Azamgarh office.
Bharti offered to expedite the process of file clearance and asked for a bribe of Rs 20,000 to clear it.
