Who Is Anumula Revanth Reddy? Here's All About The New Chief Minister Of Telangana
The Congress Party on Tuesday announced Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) President Anumula Revanth Reddy as its Chief Minster face for Telangana.
The announcement, which was widely expected, was made by Congress general secretary KC Venugopal after a series of consultations with the party's central leadership.
How?Revanth Reddy gave Congress something to smile?
Revanth Reddy has been credited for providing the only solace for the Congress, which otherwise had a disastrous performance in the recently concluded assembly elections in five states.
Congress was unseated from both Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh, while the party, which was widely expected to return to power in Madhya Pradesh, failed to do so. In Mizoram,?too, Congress was reduced to just one seat in the 40-member house.
But in Telangana, Congress managed to dethrone the two-term government of K Chandrashekar Rao, popularly known as KCR, whose Telangana Rashtra Samithi, now called Bharat Rashtra Samithi was instrumental in the formation of Telangana in 2014.
54-year-old Revanth Reddy will be the second Chief Minister of India's youngest state when he assumes office on Thursday.
Who is Revanth Reddy?
Revanth Reddy has a political career that has been spread across parties.
A graduate of Osmania University, Revanth Reddy started his political career in student politics through the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), the student wing of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
His first major electoral outing was as an independent candidate in 2007, and he was elected as a Member of the Legislative Council (MLC).
Later, he joined the TDP and won the Kodangal constituency in Mahaboobnagar district in the 2009 and 2014 assembly polls.?
After the bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh, Revanth Reddy was elected as the floor leader of TDP in the Telangana Legislative Assembly but was removed from the post in 2017.
He joined Congress the same year and was made the TPCC president in 2021.
While he lost the assembly elections in 2018, Revanth Reddy was elected as the MP from Malkajgiri in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls.
Why is Revanth Reddy still an 'outsider'?
Though there is no denying the role Revanth Reddy played in reviving the Congress's fortunes in Telangana, he is still perceived as an outsider by many within the party.
There were also reports that N Uttam Kumar Reddy, whom Revanth Reddy had replaced as TPCC President in 2021, was in the race for the post of chief minister.
It is unclear if Uttam Kumar Reddy or anyone else will be given the Deputy Chief Minister post.
