If you have worked in a corporate environment, you have likely noticed employees taking smoke breaks to relieve stress. But if you are a non-smoker, you would be missing out on that opportunity to take a break. Now, a trending TikTok video proposes an alternative to this norm, demonstrating how a nonsmoker creates her own version of a "smoke break."
The video,?shared on TikTok shows a woman asking,? "What can be the nonsmoker equivalent of a smoke break?"?
It then switches to a woman explaining, "I worked in a kitchen one time where like everyone there smoked. And like twice a shift, I would go to the back room for like three minutes and take a cookie and just eat a cookie for three minutes. And if anyone asked, I was on smoke break."
@punkitarian captioned the post, "Cookie break was the highlight of my shift."
The latest viral post has ignited a discussion on TikTok, with many users sharing their own "nonsmoker equivalent" of cigarette breaks.
"I bought Twix and would sit outside, holding the Twix like a cigarette," one user shared.
"At the pub, we called it a fresh air break for nonsmokers," another added.
"Glass of water break. Fresh air break. They're lifesavers," commented another.
It's easy to see why nonsmoking employees might feel left out when it comes to taking breaks during the workday.
A Scottish study published in BMJ Open highlighted this issue, noting that taking breaks was one of the "perceived benefits" of smoking.?
The 2018 study, titled "Tell them you smoke, you¡¯ll get more breaks," explored young adults' views and experiences with smoking, as well as their smoking habits over time.
Similarly, a 2009 study involving nurses, published in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine, found that nonsmokers were nearly twice as likely to miss their work breaks compared to their smoking colleagues.
