A 1955 Mercedes-Benz?300 SLR became the most expensive car to be ever sold in an auction after it fetched a whopping Rs. 1100 crore ($143 million). This was reported by?Canada-based auction company RM Sotheby on Thursday.
"A 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR Uhlenhaut Coup¨¦ 1955 has been sold at an auction for a record price of EUR135,000,000 to a private collector," Sotheby's said in a statement.
This sale topped the previous record which was more than $95 million and more than doubled the corresponding record for a car sold privately ($70 million).
The winning bid was made by?British car collector Simon Kidson?on behalf of an unnamed client in what is being called a secret and a remarkably unusual auction. This sale?was made during a secret auction on May 5 at the Mercedes-Benz museum in Stuttgart, Germany, Mercedes-Benz chairman Ola Kaellenius confirmed.
"We [wanted], with one single act, to demonstrate the power of the Mercedes brand," said Kaellenius during an interview on May 18 near Monte Carlo.
This car is extremely rare. It was one of only two of its kind ever made and was never owned privately until now.
Mercedes has refused to name the buyer since people have been trying to narrow down the list.?
