The story of a Bengaluru cobbler who shares his small business with three dogs and a kitten moved social media users to collect donations for him. Ramayya Uncle, as the cobbler is affectionately known, works out of a small shop in India's technology hub, where he cares for at least three stray dogs and one kitten.
His story originally received widespread attention in December of last year, when a prominent Instagram account called "Leia the Golden Indie" published his video online.? ??
¡°This sweet old cobbler has a tiny shop outside Decathlon in Whitefield, Bangalore,¡± read the caption of the video which inspired the fundraising effort.
¡°If you ever pass by there, I hope you'll take a second to look at what real love, kindness and generosity look like. In that tiny space where he works to repair old shoes, you will always find at least 3 dogs sleeping warmly and a little kitten playing.¡±
The account, and hundreds of subsequent viewers, complimented Ramayya Uncle for sharing his limited space and food with stray animals, adding that his lack of resources did not prevent him from being generous. In fact, the kind-hearted cobbler impacted so many viewers that they inquired about how they could help him.?
The Instagram account 'Leia the Golden Indie' then organised a fundraiser for the Bengaluru cobbler. The fundraiser page stated that Ramayya Uncle not only fed the stray animals but also took them to the hospital when they became ill or injured. Dozens of people donated to the campaign, and the proceeds were given to the cobbler last week, who was moved to tears by the gesture.?
The funds raised were handed to him along with a card listing the names of everyone who donated to the event. When Ramayya Uncle received the money, he said that his wife had died four months prior, and he had been struggling to raise his daughter alone.?
The woman behind the Instagram account added that half of the funds raised will be transferred to Ramayya Uncle's bank account, which he could use for "anything he needs or wants." The remaining half would be used to provide food for stray dogs in the region.?
Many people on the internet were glad to hear the news, others complimented the man for his generosity. Here's what people wrote in the comments.?
