Meta, the company behind Facebook and Instagram, has begun layoffs across several countries this week. Reports suggest the cuts are part of a shift toward hiring more machine learning engineers. While an internal memo states the layoffs are performance-based, a former employee who spent three years at the company disagrees, attributing them to what he calls "Zuck's newfound 'masculine energy.'"
Elana Reman Safner, who was laid off from Meta earlier this week as part of the company's so-called "performance-based" job cuts, shared her frustration and disbelief in a LinkedIn post.?
She expressed feeling blindsided by the decision, stating, "I have never received a review below 'Meets All' in my 3+ years at Meta, and I was on mat leave for 6 months until November. It is very hard to believe that¡ªdespite Meta indicating my expectations are prorated¡ªI did not do enough."
She also pointed out that many others affected by the layoffs had similar stories of strong performance records and recent leaves of absence.
Reflecting on her time at the company, she described her journey at Meta as a "trial by fire," recalling that "we launched a product line in my first month!"
Over the years, she provided legal and privacy guidance for various app features and metaverse projects, helped phase out older products to save resources while reducing legal risk, and supported major metaverse initiatives.?
However, she did not hold back when it came to the downsides of her time at Meta.?
She criticised the unpredictability of her career trajectory, saying she wouldn't miss her "career trajectory being completely at the whim of product decisions I have no control over, mental overload, 34-page one-pagers, having 62 tabs open, deprecating beloved products because they weren't 'moonshot' enough for Zuck, Zuck's newfound 'masculine energy' and becoming its collateral damage."
For now, she plans to focus on her well-being¡ªspending time with her family, running, crocheting, and taking a much-needed vacation before looking for her next opportunity.?
She remains confident in her skills, asserting, "I'm not a 'low performer.' I've got the reviews to prove it, and countless colleagues and managers will vouch for me!"
